Silence

During the silence in class, as a class we experienced a very awkward moment. It was not that we had never been in a silent situation i class before, but we had never started class without the teacher telling us what to do so we felt uncomfortable. Therefore, being high school students molded by years of classes, we were in utter confusion. Thus, we did not know how to react to a new style of teaching. This can teach us the life lesson of always being open to new ideas. Many students I felt were looking at each other with expressions that were thinking along the lines of 'this is stupid.' However, if they were in another area these looks could have been thought of as very rude. For example, as a Jew, I am not used to the way that a church is run. Therefore, when I was required to go into a church for a Hebrew School field trip, I did not know how to react. When the people knelt down to pray, I was looking up and smiling at friends (with that 'this is stupid' look) in the awkward silence, and many people thought that I was being quite rude. Therefore, during the times of awkward silence we need to think of why this is going on and not be afraid of the situation. Also, it is only awkward if you make it awkward.

  1. I think you explained the concept of awkward silences well and how we have to kind of learn to deal with it better. I agree that sometimes people just don't know what to do so they may think this is stupid, but in reality they are just taken aback by the awkward moment.

  2. Wow joey you brought up a ton of good points. I completely agree that this has taught us the lesson that we should have an open mind to everything. And distinguishing between the fact that we have experienced silence, just never without explanation, I thought was an excellent point. Very good post and good music by the way.

  3. It's very true how it's only awkward if you make it awkward. People need to learn to adapt to different circumstances and they need to adapt to what life offers to them. I really like how you said that in life you always need to be open to new ideas. I couldn't agree any more. Great points Joey! Good post.

  4. You brought up some very good points. We have been accustomed to a generic formula of how class is played out: teacher stands and talks, we sit and listen. We were temporarily taken out of our comfort zone, and we instantly did not know what to do. I agree with the fact that we have to embrace new things such as this with an open mind.
